The landscapes of the West coast are wild and elemental – waves, weather and World Heritage Wilderness being the keynotes.

The small sea-side town of Strahan is the gateway to Macquarie Harbour, to dramatic mountain peaks, to beautiful rainforest and the wild, pristine Gordon River that twist it's way through the wilderness.

Somehow a dark history is palpable here – it was the base for timber-men seeking precious Huon pine, the port for a rich copper mine and there was a notorious convict settlement on Sarah Island.  Wildlife clings to this wild land, tiny Bonnet Island is home to colonies of penguins and shearwaters.

The remote beaches of Cape Sorrell are criss-crossed by the tracks of seabirds and foraging animals and deep within the heaths and moorland shelters one of the rarest bird species on Earth, the endangered orange-bellied parrot.
